What Shakespearean play would you recommend on an audio book?
In school I did read Romeo and Juliet, so I’ve been introduced to his works but I’d like to delve deeper on my own. I’m too intimidated to read his plays do you think I will still get the full experience if I listen to it on an audio book?
You have read R&J in school, so I think that might actually be the best one to start with, especially to get the richest experience of it. You know the story, you've read the words before, so you have a higher comfort level with the material and that will definitely add to your engagement and understanding.
Yes to Macbeth, as the other answer suggests. Also: Hamlet, Love's Labor's Lost, Merchant of Venice, Othello, Taming of the Shrew...oh, I think they're all wonderful, but that's a representative selection to get you started.
While not the only choice available, I recommend: the Essential Shakespeare. It contains selections from a number of his plays and sonnets. Each selection is prefaced with info on what you are about to hear. You can check it out here: http://www.amazon.com/Essential-Shakespeare-Highbridge-Classics-William/dp/1598870084/ref=pd_sim_b_1
There are many of Shakespeare's plays available to watch on You Tube as well.
IMHO the richest experience is seeing it performed live, but I'm a bit biased, since I'm an avid theatre person!
